Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, West Jefferson was established in 1915. History dates back to 1779 when Colonel Ben Cleveland was awarded ownership of the valley for his efforts in battling the British at King’s Mountain. In the early 1900s, the town of West Jefferson expanded quickly with the coming of the Virginia-Carolina Railroad to bring in supplies and take out timber.

The West Jefferson NC real estate market consists primarily of single-family homes priced between $120,000 and $500,000. The city limits of West Jefferson encompass less than two square miles and the town itself has a population of approximately 1500 residents. The West Jefferson township stretches further out and most homesites with a West Jefferson address are not within the city limits.
