Avery County is home to three popular mountains for tourists: Grandfather Mountain, Sugar Mountain, and Beech Mountain. These mountains offer numerous hiking trails, opportunities to gaze upon the immense wildlife in the area, skiing, biking, zip-lining, and much more. Other area attractions include Elk Falls, Linville Gorge, Linville Caverns, Linville Falls, The Lin Cove Viaduct, and the Pisgah National Forest.
Located along the Northwest edge of North Carolina, Avery county borders Tennessee, and the counties of Watauga, Caldwell, Burke, and Mitchell. Just 30 minutes northwest of Hickory, NC, and 30 minutes to the Tennessee border. Asheville is approximately a 90-minute drive and Charlotte is just a two-hour trip. Elevations within the county range from 1440 ft to 6160 ft with Banner Elk sitting at approximately 3739 ft.
