County Property Tax Rates at a Glance

One of the pleasant surprises for buyers moving from other states: North Carolina mountain counties tax property lightly. Here are the current official county rates:

Properties inside town limits (West Jefferson, Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Beech Mountain, and others) pay an additional municipal rate. Rates change with county budgets and revaluations — all four counties are scheduled to revalue in 2027 — so confirm current figures for any specific property with our agents or the county tax office.

A quick example of what these numbers mean: at Ashe County's rate, a $400,000 home outside town limits carries a county tax bill of roughly $1,760 per year — a fraction of what the same home costs annually in most Northeastern, Florida, or metro markets.
